Coats on table

LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NJ โ€” On a chilly Friday evening, December 20, as snow flurries gently blanketed the air, the Multilingual Learning Center transformed into a warm and welcoming refuge for the community. Approximately 130 individuals gathered at the center for its annual Coat Drive, a heartwarming event dedicated to providing winter coats to families in need.

Under the leadership of Director Danie Orelien, the districtโ€™s Multilingual Learning Center has quickly become a beacon of support since its grand opening in November. Designed to serve the district's growing multilingual student population, the center also extends its reach as a vital resource hub for families navigating various challenges. The coat drive was just one example of the centerโ€™s commitment to fostering care and community.

For more than three hours, families streamed into the center, greeted warmly by members of the Multilingual Learning staff. The dedicated team worked tirelessly to help men, women, and children find coats in their perfect sizes and favorite colors. Winter accessories such as hats and gloves were also available, ensuring each family left equipped to face the cold months ahead. Smiles lit up the room as children eagerly tried on brightly colored coats, while parents expressed gratitude for the thoughtful and well-organized effort.

The coat drive was made possible through generous donations from local organizations, district employees, and community members, whose contributions filled racks and tables with winter essentials. Volunteers played a vital role in the eventโ€™s success, sorting donations, assisting families, and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Orelien emphasized the districtโ€™s commitment to holistic support for multilingual learners and their families. For many, the coat drive provided more than just physical warmthโ€”it offered a sense of belonging and care during the holiday season. Children laughed as they explored the racks, parents connected with staff and volunteers, and families left with more than just coats: they left with a renewed sense of hope and community spirit.

Through events like the Coat Drive, the Multilingual Learning Center continues to shine as a place of warmth, connection, and opportunityโ€”where education and community care go hand in hand.
